Texas Stew Recipe

There is a special kind of comfort found in a big bubbling pot of stew. It is the kind of comfort food that doesn’t just fill your belly, but satisfies all your cravings in the most healthy way. I remember the first time I had Texas Stew on the cousins” campaign trip.

We didn’t have any fancy ingredients, but just simple pantry staples, and somehow it transformed into a five-star meal. The beans were sweet and rich, and the meat was infused with delicious flavors of herbs and sauces.

I can still remember passing around the single bottle of hot sauce and eating a pot of stew, never like before. This simplest preparation is surely going to become one of your new favorites for all the good reasons.

Trust me, once you give it a try, you will be hooked. To get started, review the details below to make your preparation easier.

Expert Tips That I Recommend

  • After you have browned the beef, make sure to remove all excess fat so it does not make your recipe greasy.
  • Do not add any vegetables before cooking; first cook the onion properly, as it adds a rich flavor to the preparation.
  • Make sure you chop the potatoes evenly, as it helps them cook at the same pace and become tender without turning mushy.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan while cooking the beef, as it can affect the texture. It is advisable to cook them in batches.
  • Avoid overcooking the vegetables, as they can lose their texture and become overly tender.

Recipe Variation for Different Diets

  • Keto Version: Add cauliflower instead of corn, mushrooms instead of carrots, and black beans instead of ranch-style soy beans. Replace potatoes with cauliflower. Make sure to check whether chili sauce and Worcestershire sauce are sugar-free.
  • Gluten-Free Version: Make sure to check whether canned corn, beans, and carrots are gluten-free. Make sure to check whether Worcestershire sauce and chili sauce are gluten-free. Also, replace potatoes with cauliflower.

FAQs About Texas Stew

How do I prevent potatoes from falling apart?

To prevent the potatoes from falling apart, cut them into large, uniform chunks. Do not overboil them, as it can affect their texture.

What if the stew is watery?

If the stew is watery, you can let it simmer uncovered for some time. Do not add flour to thicken it until you want the stew to be very thick.

Why is the beef hard?

The beef usually becomes hard and chewy if you overcook it or put it on high heat instead of a gentle simmer.

Should I stir the stew?

I do not suggest stirring it frequently, as it can break the potatoes and vegetables.  You can stir it occasionally and gently.
