How To Make Filet Mignon At Home

A dish from the 90s, Filet Mignon features tenderloin, the softest and most desirable cut of meat. A lip-smacking Filet Mignon takes just four ingredients and half an hour. My mother cooks the perfect Filet Mignon and serves it to us twice a week.

That’s how Filet Mignon has always been my favorite piece of meat. When I first tried my mother’s Filet Mignon recipe, I overcooked it. Then, I noticed that the temperature was too high. But soon, after a few trials, I nailed it, and everyone at my place absolutely loved it.

So, whenever you try this recipe, check the temperature before putting the meat in the oven. If you are within 10 degrees of the desired temperature, it will cook in the minimum time. Check out all other details below, and you will agree that Filet Mignon at home is, no doubt, one of the best dishes to serve at your dining table.

Expert Tips That I Recommend

  • Season the steak thoroughly before cooking so the spices penetrate deeply.
  • Add the steak to the oil only when it is shimmering.
  • Let the steak remain undisturbed so it develops a golden-brown crust. Once the crust forms, then flip it.
  • Baste continuously, as it adds better flavor. All you need to do is tilt the skillet slightly and spoon the butter over continuously.
  • Don’t overcook the steak; remove it as soon as it looks cooked.

Recipe Variation for Different Diets

  • Low-Sodium Version: Use unsalted butter instead of regular butter and omit salt entirely.

Storing And Reheating This Recipe

Storing

  • Let the steak cool completely. Then wrap it in foil, place it in an airtight container, and refrigerate. Consume within 3-4 days.
  • For longer storage, you can also freeze it. Add the steak to a freezer-safe container and freeze it for up to one week.

Reheating

  • Oven: First, preheat the oven to 300°F. Then add the steak to an oven-safe dish and cover it lightly with foil. Now heat for 15-20 minutes.
  • Stovetop: Heat a skillet, add the steak and some broth, then gently warm for 5-8 minutes. Keep checking it in between to prevent overheating, as it can affect the texture and dry out the steak.

What To Serve With This Recipe

The Fillet Mignon serves well with garlic butter vegetables or roasted vegetables. You can also serve it with creamed spinach or roasted asparagus. You can also add charred bell peppers or grilled zucchini to keep it fresh and satisfying. For drinks, I prefer Mulled Wine, but you can choose any other drink of your choice.

FAQs About Fillet Mignon

How do I prevent steak from turning dry?

The best way to prevent steak from turning dry is to avoid overcooking it and to let it rest before slicing. You can check the steak’s internal temperature to confirm doneness.

Why should I dry the steak?

Drying the steak is important because it helps it cook better and ensures the seasoning sticks well. A well-dried steak helps it brown properly.

Why does the steak stick to the skillet?

The steak usually sticks to the skillet if the skillet is not preheated or if you move it too early. Let the crust form, then flip it.

What should I do if the steak is browning way too quickly?

Reduce the heat slightly before adding the butter. This helps prevent the crust and butter from burning, and it lets the center cook properly.9
