Whataburger Mushroom Swiss Burger Copycat Recipe

The Whataburger Mushroom Swiss Burger is the latest addition to the Whataburger menu. It features beef patties, mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and rich spices. Want to mimic Whataburger flavors at home and make a mushroom Swiss burger in a flick? Try to see the magic!

Grab a few pantry staples and get started. You need mushrooms, ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, butter, steak seasoning, Swiss cheese, and more. Caramelize the mushrooms, form the patties, cook them, then assemble the burger and enjoy.

If you want, you can use cremini mushrooms or any other type of mushrooms available. Below are the ingredients, equipment, and steps to make a copycat Whataburger mushroom Swiss burger at home.

Expert Tips That I Recommend

  • Brush the buns lightly with butter before toasting to enjoy a crispy, golden finish.
  • Create a light indentation on each patty with your thumb; this helps it cook evenly and prevents it from puffing up.
  • Turn the heat to low to caramelize onions, which brings out their natural sweetness.

Recipe Variation for Different Diets

  • Gluten-Free: Replace regular buns with gluten-free buns. Also, use gluten-free sauces and seasonings, and double-check that they are gluten-free.
  • Keto Version: To enjoy the keto version, skip the traditional bun and choose lettuce wraps. Use sugar-free au jus free of flour and cornstarch.

Storing And Reheating This Recipe

Storing

  • First, let the Mushroom Swiss Burger cool down completely, then transfer to an airtight container. Now, refrigerate the container and eat later.

Reheating

  • To enjoy a warm burger patty, place it in a skillet over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes. To keep it moist, add some broth to the pan, then warm it in the oven at 180°C for 8-10 minutes.
  • You can also heat separately by reheating mushrooms and onions for 30-60 seconds. Then toast the buns and melt the Swiss cheese over a hot patty.

What To Serve With This Recipe

This Whataburger Mushroom Swiss Burger pairs well with a variety of sides. My all-time favorite is creamy macaroni salad.  You can also serve it with roasted broccoli or baked beans as a wholesome preparation. You can add many different recipes as a side.

Total Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Pound Baby Bella Mushrooms or white button mushrooms
  • 2 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • 2 Tablespoons Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • ¼ cup Beef Broth
  • 1 Teaspoon Minced Garlic
  • 1 Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Balsamic Vinegar
  • ½ Teaspoon Dried Thyme

For the burgers

  • 1 Pound Ground Beef 80/20 blend
  • 1 Teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Steak Seasoning
  • 4 Slices Swiss Cheese
  • 4 Brioche Hamburger Buns

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Tong
  • Bowl
  • Spoon

Method

  • Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the sliced mushrooms and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they develop a rich golden-brown color. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  • Pour the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce into the skillet, then stir in the balsamic vinegar, thyme, and black pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer gently for around 10 minutes so the liquid reduces slightly and the mushrooms absorb all the savory flavors. Remove from the heat once they're tender and coated in the sauce.
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with the Worcestershire sauce and steak seasoning. Mix everything gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty. Press a shallow indentation into the center of each patty to help them cook evenly and maintain their shape.
  • Heat a grill or heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties onto the hot surface and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare, adjusting the cooking time if you prefer a different level of doneness. During the final minute, top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese and cover the grill or skillet briefly so the cheese melts completely.
  • Spread a thin layer of butter on the cut sides of the brioche buns. Place them cut-side down on the grill or in a skillet and toast for 1 to 2 minutes, or until they're lightly golden and crisp.
  • Place each cheesy beef patty on the bottom half of a toasted brioche bun. Spoon a generous portion of the sautéed mushrooms over the top, then finish with the remaining bun. Add your favorite condiments, such as mayonnaise or mustard, if desired, and serve immediately while hot.
